Alaina Scavuzzo (Sun LAB) - Undergraduate Student
Alaina is a fourth-year undergraduate student in Biomedical Engineering. She previously worked as a Student Research Assistant for the Department of Genetics and Genome Sciences at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. She joined the SUN lab in August of 2021 where she is studying the effects that the PDGFRa gene has on oligodendrocyte precursor cells and myelin development. She will defend her undergraduate thesis and graduate with an Honors Research Distinction in May of 2024. In her free time, Alaina plays on the OSU Women’s Club Volleyball team, leads a group in Engineers Without Boarders, and ventures to new coffee shops with friends. Email: scavuzzo.9(at)buckeyemail.osu.edu Phone +1 614 293 6506 Sara Sun (Sun LAB) - Undergraduate Student Sara is a second-year undergraduate student majoring in Neuroscience with a systems/behavioral specialization and is currently working on her Bachelor of Science on the pre-med track. Since Sara joined the lab in May of 2022, she has mainly worked on learning aspects of genotyping and other general lab undergraduate duties. In her free time, she does Taekwondo for the OSU taekwondo club, loves to explore cute cafes, and spend time with friends. Email: sun.3052(at)buckeyemail.osu.edu Phone: +1 614 293 6506 Ally Okonak (TEd LAB) - Undergraduate Student Ally is a second year studying Biomedical Science with a Neuroscience minor on the pre-med track. Since joining the lab in September 2022, Ally has conducted genotyping procedures and helped manage the mice colonies. In her free time, she leads a fundraising group in BuckeyeThon, volunteers with the nonprofit A Kid Again, and is involved in her sorority, Alpha Chi Omega, which raises awareness for domestic violence. She also enjoys hiking, skiing, and going to concerts. Email: okonak.2(at)buckeyemail.osu.edu Phone: +1 614 293 6506 Stephen Vidman (TEd LAB) - Graduate Student Stephen received his B.S in Biology from Youngstown State University and graduated with his M.S in Health and Rehabilitation Sciences from OSU in 2018. His thesis focused on the roles of central pattern generators and reflex conditioning in recovery after spinal cord injury. Since joining the Tedeschi lab as a PhD student in 2022, he has assisted with investigating various aspects of axon regeneration after neurotrauma (TBI, SCI, stroke, etc.). These techniques include immunohistochemistry, dissections, cell culturing, three-dimensional modeling/imaging, and the study of nanoparticles to deliver pro-regenerative compounds. In his free time, Stephen enjoys video games, leisure science, camping, and hiking with his girlfriend. Debasish Roy (TEd LAB) - Postdoctoral Fellow Dr. Debasish Roy earned a BS degree in Chemistry, Zoology, and Biotechnology from Bangalore University (India), and completed his MS (Biotechnology) and Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Vellore Institute of Technology University (India) as a Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Scholar. His research discovered how a key enzyme in adipocytes (e.g., adipocyte triglyceride lipase) is transcriptionally regulated during adipocyte maturation. Before joining the Tedeschi Lab, he was a postdoctoral fellow at Boston University School of Medicine. There, he studied the role of the transcription factor Egr1 in the regulation of leptin in adipocytes. With a background in molecular metabolism and a strong interest in understanding the metabolic regulation of neuronal regeneration and systemic metabolism in spinal cord injury, Debasish spearheads several projects in the lab to gain mechanistic insights into the impact of central nervous system trauma on adipose tissue and lipid metabolism. Outside of the lab, Debasish enjoys hiking, painting (watercolor and acrylic), driving, and spending time with his family. Sai Rishik Lingam (TEd LAB) - Highschool/undergraduate student Sai is a highschool student in his second year as undergraduate student (yes, that's right!) with an interest in Molecular/Cellular Neuroscience on the pre-med track. Since joining the Tedeschi lab in January of 2023, he has learned laboratory techniques through projects involving changes in neuronal circuit structure post-TBI and stroke. Despite the short period of time after joining the lab, he has mastered several laboratory techniques including genotyping, tissue dissections, cryosectioning, immunohistochemistry, tissue imaging, data quantification and analysis, aiding a variety of surgical procedures (e.g., stroke and TBI). In his free time, he enjoys public speaking, practices Taekwondo, and spends time with friends and family. Email: lingam.12(at)buckeyemail.osu.edu Phone +1 614 333 0274 Marissa Hooks, B.S. (SUN LAB) - Research Assistant Marissa recently graduated from Allegheny College in May of 2023 with a bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience with a minor in Global Health Studies. At Allegheny College she worked as a Research Assistant in a molecular biology lab. She completed her senior thesis in Neuroscience on “The Effects of Seizure Activity and Anti-epileptic Drugs on Neurogenesis in Procambarus clarkii”. Marissa joined the SUN lab in July 2023 and currently works on managing the mouse colonies, genotyping, and cell culture. Outside of the lab, Marissa enjoys reading, and spending time with her family and friends. Email: hooks.89(at)osu.edu Phone +1 614 293 6506 Maren Beall, B.S. (SUN LAB) - Research Assistant Maren graduated with a B.S. in Neuroscience from The Ohio State University in 2022. She had been involved in cardiovascular research at Nationwide Children's Hospital prior to joining the Sun Lab in October 2023. In the future, she hopes to remain in academia and pursue a PhD in neuroscience or a related field. Email: beall.58(at)osu.edu Phone +1 614 293 6506 Chelsea Madura (TEd LAB) - Undergraduate Student Chelsea is a second-year Neuroscience major with a cognitive/computational specialization on a PhD track. Since joining the lab in October of 2023, she has mainly practiced genotyping methods including DNA amplification, PCR, and Gel Electrophoresis, as well as other general lab tasks. Outside of the lab, Chelsea is a part of Buckeyes Raising Awareness in Neuroscience, a student organization dedicated to raising awareness for brain injury, as well as the STEM Exploration and Engagement scholars program. Chelsea is also involved with dance clubs on campus, likes to try new cafés, and loves to go on hikes. Braden Martens (TEd LAB) - Undergraduate Student Braden is a second year Neuroscience Major with a systems and behavior specialization on a pre-med track. Outside of the lab, he is involved in the Pay it Forward Service Cohort through the Office of Student Life, and Power in Neuroscience. Outside of the lab, Braden enjoys spending time with his friends, running, and when it snows- snowboarding! Hayes Johnson (Sun LAB) - Undergraduate Student Hayes is a second year biochemistry major on the pre-med track. Since Hayes joined the lab in January of 2023, he has worked with organotypic confocal imaging, as well as general lab duties. Outside of the lab, he enjoys playing sports with his friends, cheering on buckeyes, as well as hiking and skiing when he visits his family in Wyoming. |
